It was interesting to see various representations of snakes in the idols that were created. All of them were smeared with haldi-kumkum during the Nag Panchami festival. I just couldnt capture the smell of milk/egg that was around the place.

Ganesh Immersion

In wake of the Ganesh Immersion festival tomorrow, all traffic restrictions are in place. Hope it is event free(verdict on Ayodhya happens to be this week too). All my friends venturing out there for the picture-perfect frame, be cautious and safe.

An idol and a crane in place, waiting for a truck to take the idol to its buyers address. The cranes are again put in use during immersion. Sure does make me wonder when our Gods got so big and ‘gaudy’.

The festival was made to bring the masses together and unite people against the British rule during the freedom movement, and ever since it has become a well-organised public event growing bigger with each passing year.

It would seem rather ironical, that so much human effort would eventually go into water, polluting it as well. The custom of having enormous idols and so much fanfare(song/dance and band baaja) needs to be re- examined but religion and culture are so deeply ingrained in the Indian psyche that such an effort could prove an uphill harder task.

Kudos to all of you using an eco-friendly Ganesha!

Namaste

When the Khairatabad Ganesh Idol was being made various smaller sized Ganesh statues were made for other buyers. This particular Ganesh Idol was being made for someone at ChappalBazar.

The kids probably from the same school/locality asked one of their friend to click a picture. I couldnt resist taking a picture myself.

Ganesh Idols being immersed into the Hussain Sagar. About 18 cranes have been employed over the last 10 days to tackle the crowds who arrive for the immersion of the Ganesh Idols in their respective localities.

It is rather unfortunate that the state is currently mourning the loss of the Chief Minister YSR.

Immersed

floating_ganesh_small

One of the many deities that were immersed in Tank Bund floats to the bank. Hard to believe such is the fate of the Gods that were once worshiped.
