It was interesting to see various representations of snakes in the idols that were created. All of them were smeared with haldi-kumkum during the Nag Panchami festival. I just couldnt capture the smell of milk/egg that was around the place.

Ganesh Idols being immersed into the Hussain Sagar. About 18 cranes have been employed over the last 10 days to tackle the crowds who arrive for the immersion of the Ganesh Idols in their respective localities.

It is rather unfortunate that the state is currently mourning the loss of the Chief Minister YSR.

khairatabad ganesh_small

Devotees flock in thousands to come and catch a glimpse of their favourite Ganesh Idol in Hyderabad. In a few days the deity will be immersed in the Hussain Sagar Lake.

Don’t remember seeing the huge advertisements in the past. Also these days all major religious festivals seem to draw a lot of political banners too.

On either side of the huge Ganesh statue are two smaller statues, one depicting a story and another of a God. This year the commitee has decided to have Dattatreya who is said to be an avataar of the Divine Trinity Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. More information about the God can be read at wiki

THE Indian Idol

Preparations underway with the Ganesh Pooja celebrations right around the corner. The tradition of making the statue at Khairatabad has had a long history of 55 years. The Ganesh idol is said to be the tallest in the world, averaging to 42 feet. Around 100 sculptors are employed amongst whom some are specialists brought in from Chennai.
