Dancing Tales

After a very long time I had attended a dance performance. The last one I had seen was “For Pina” which was totally contemporary and for which you had to create your own story from the visuals. While the music presentation as well as attire was very modern, the dance itself was an amalgamation of age old martial arts like kalairipet, yoga, tai chi to name a few.

Although the whole theme was different the style adopted by Ananda Shankar Jayanth’s Dancing Tales ..Panchantantra was similar- a very contemporary representation of the timeless Panchatantra tales relevant even in current times, using Bharat Natyam and Kuchipudi dance movements. There were no songs, just an introduction to give these stories a context and the costumes seemed comfortable and flexible enough to depict various characters with minor modifications.

In the coming few days, a series of images from the performance shall be presented, along with the underlying story. This was a part of the opening folk tune to create the mood!
